Counterpulsation Overview Module:
This module will introduce the use of counterpulsation therapy to balance myocardial oxygen supply and demand in ischemic left ventricular failure.
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Explain ischemic left ventricular failure and its physio-pathologic basis.
- Associate the primary effects of counterpulsation therapy with the myocardial oxygen supply and demand ration.
- Apply principles in balloon catheter selection and placement and methods of sheathless and sheathed percutaneous insertion.
- Recall the rationale for balloon timing and trigger selection.
- Assess the factors that influence diastolic augmentation and its physiologic outcomes.
- Identify potential side effects and complications associated with the use of IABP.
